Dawn Phenomenon

 

“Dawn” is often used metaphorically to mean:

  • Beginning of something new 

                                     Dawn = The beginning of morning, just before the sun rises

Dawn phenomenon is an early morning rise in blood glucose levels seen in people with Diabetes mellitus, typically between 4 AM – 8 AM, without preceding hypoglycemia. 
 

In the early morning, the body naturally releases counter-regulatory hormones:

  • Growth hormone
  • Cortisol
  • Glucagon
  • Catecholamines

 These hormones:

  • Increase insulin resistance
