GLUT

 

In the 1970s, biochemical studies demonstrated specific glucose transport activity in cell membranes, especially in red blood cells. 

 The first glucose transporter protein was purified from human erythrocytes.

In 1985, the first gene encoding a glucose transporter was cloned:

 This was a major breakthrough, confirming that glucose transport
