                                                                  April 8, 1654

Congregation Shearith Israel, founded in 1654 in New York City by Spanish and Portuguese refugees, is North America's first Jewish congregation.

They consecrated their first synagogue building in 1730 on Mill Street (now South William St), later relocating to their current Central Park West building in 1897

 Founder Group: 23 Jewish refugees, mostly of Spanish and Portuguese origin, who arrived from Recife, Brazil. 

Significance: It is the oldest Jewish congregation in the United States and was the only Jewish congregation in New York City until 1825.
