  • In 1993, a landmark observation by Didier Assicot and colleagues showed:
    • Patients with severe bacterial infections and sepsis had markedly elevated PCT levels.
    • This was surprising because PCT was thought to be only a thyroid-related peptide.

  • PCT rises systemically during bacterial infections
  • It correlates with severity of sepsis
