Tel Aviv was founded in 1909 as a modern Jewish suburb named Ahuzat Bayit on the sand dunes outside the ancient port city of Jaffa. On April 11, 1909, 66 families drew lots with shells to divide the land. It was renamed Tel Aviv in 1910 and became an independent city in 1934, later merging with Jaffa.
