Blast From The Past: Patent Cooperation Treaty


The Washington Diplomatic Conference on the Patent Cooperation Treaty was held in Washington from 25 May to 19 June 1970. 

The Patent Cooperation Treaty was signed on the last day of the conference on 19 June 1970. The Treaty entered into force on 24 January 1978, initially with 18 contracting states.

The first international applications were filed on 1 June 1978.

Blast From The Past: Heimlich Maneuver


The Heimlich Maneuver—a life-saving first-aid procedure for choking victims—was first published by Dr. Henry J. Heimlich on June 1, 1974

His article, titled "Pop Goes the Cafe Coronary," debuted in the medical journal Emergency Medicine. Within months after the publication of this article, dozens of choking episodes were reported in which the victims' lives were saved by this method.

 It is employed today by first aid personnel, emergency medical technicians, medical professionals and the lay public in a variety of emergencies.

Adolf Eichmann, a chief architect of the Holocaust, was executed by hanging on the night between May 31 and June 1, 1962, at Ramla Prison in Israel.

Blast From The Past: Louis Brandeis

 

 President Woodrow Wilson nominated Louis D. Brandeis to the U.S. Supreme Court on January 28, 1916.

 After facing a bitter four-month confirmation process heavily fueled by antisemitism and his progressive politics, the Senate confirmed him on June 1, 1916. He served on the Court until 1939, becoming its first Jewish justice.
