Dr. Robert Guthrie, the American microbiologist and physician widely known as the "Father of Newborn Screening," was born on June 28, 1916. He is best remembered for inventing the Guthrie Test, a simple bacterial inhibition assay for early Phenylketonuria (PKU) detection using dried blood spots.
