The Heimlich Maneuver—a life-saving first-aid procedure for choking victims—was first published by Dr. Henry J. Heimlich on June 1, 1974.
His article, titled "Pop Goes the Cafe Coronary," debuted in the medical journal Emergency Medicine. Within months after the publication of this article, dozens of choking episodes were reported in which the victims' lives were saved by this method.
It is employed today by first aid personnel, emergency medical technicians, medical professionals and the lay public in a variety of emergencies.
