Restless Legs Syndrome Awareness Day

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), also called Willis–Ekbom disease, is a neurological disorder characterized by an urge to move the legs, usually accompanied by uncomfortable sensations, which occur mainly at rest and are relieved temporarily by movement.

1672: Thomas Willis (English physician) gave the earliest well-recognized description of RLS. He described patients with an irresistible need to move their limbs, particularly at night, causing severe sleep disturbance.

1945: Karl-Axel Ekbom, a Swedish neurologist, published a systematic clinical description of the disorder and popularized the term “restless legs.”

World Narcolepsy Day

 Jean-Baptiste-Édouard Gélineau (1828–1906), a French physician, published a detailed account in 1880.

He coined the term:

Narcolepsy

derived from Greek:

• narkē = numbness/stupor
• lēpsis = seizure/attack

Gélineau described irresistible, recurrent sleep attacks and recognized the condition as distinct from epilepsy.
