Perkins Tonometer

 

British ophthalmologist In 1965, Professor Edward "Terry" Sylvester Perkins  developed the Perkins hand-held applanation tonometer in the mid-1960s.  

Perkins designed it specifically to allow accurate IOP measurements in any position—sitting, lying down, or under anesthesia.

 

The Perkins tonometer preserved the optical and mechanical principles of Goldmann applanation tonometry while making the instrument portable.

Avocado

 

The avocado is one of the oldest cultivated fruits in the Americas, with a history spanning more than 9,000 years 

Archaeological evidence suggests that avocados were consumed as early as 8,000–10,000 years ago in central Mexico. 

                                            

On May 15, 1915, the newly formed California Avocado Association voted to adopt "avocado" as the official commercial name.

 

 

In the 1920s when Rudolph Hass, a California mail carrier and amateur horticulturist, planted avocado seedlings on his property. One particular tree produced fruit with a pebbly black skin and exceptionally creamy flesh.

In 1935, Rudolph Hass patented the tree, making it the first patented fruit tree in the United States. Nearly all Hass avocados grown worldwide today are descendants of that original tree.
