1954 – The disease was first described by pathologist Benjamin Castleman and surgeon Virginia Towne at the Massachusetts General Hospital. They reported a 40-year-old man with a mediastinal mass that histologically showed lymphoid follicular hyperplasia, prominent capillary proliferation, and hyalinization.

Sjorgen Syndrome Day

 

                                                                       Henrik Sjorgen 

Dr. Henrik Sjögren was a Swedish ophthalmologist who published his landmark doctoral thesis on the systemic autoimmune condition now known as Sjögren's disease (formerly Sjögren's syndrome). His foundational work linked chronic dryness with systemic manifestations.

 

The Discovery: First inspired in 1929 after meeting a patient with dry eyes, dry mouth, and joint pain                                                                                                                                       

The Thesis: Published in 1933 under the title  "Zur Kenntnis der Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca", detailing 19 clinical cases.

Blast From The Past: Space Dogs

 On July 22, 1951, the Soviet Union launched Dezik and Tsygan, the first dogs—and first mammals—to successfully fly into space on a suborbital flight and return safely

Dezik and Tsygan became the first dogs to fly in space and safely return to Earth when they were launched on an R-1V sub-orbital rocket from the Kapustin Yar site on July 22, 1951. 

They reached an altitude of 110 kilometers, experiencing roughly four minutes of weightlessness.
