Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour Awareness Day

 

In 1983, Juan Rosai and colleagues introduced the term "gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST)" to describe gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors that lacked clear smooth muscle or nerve sheath differentiation.

A major breakthrough occurred in 1998, when Hirota Seiichi and colleagues discovered activating mutations in the KIT proto-oncogene (CD117) in most GISTs
