In 1980, under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the new theocratic government established an Islamic judicial apparatus, appointing Ayatollah Mohammad Beheshti as the first chief justice to draft and enforce laws derived strictly from the Ja'fari (Shia) school of Islamic jurisprudence
