New York City And Legionnaires’ disease

 

July 1976: More than 2,000 members of the American Legion gathered at the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia for their annual convention.

Shortly after the event, many attendees developed a severe respiratory illness characterized by fever, cough, chest pain, and pneumonia.

In total, 221 people became ill and 34 died, prompting a major public health investigation.
