1939: Nevus of Ota was first described by the Japanese dermatologist Masao Ota, published his observations on patients with bluish pigmentation of the face and sclera in Japan.
The condition was originally termed "Nevus fusco-caeruleus ophthalmomaxillaris", which translates to "dark blue nevus of the ophthalmic and maxillary regions."
