Blast From The Past: Aphrodite

           Discovery

Discovered in April 8, 1820 on the Greek island of Milos

Found by a local farmer, later acquired by the French and gifted to King Louis XVIII

 

  • Created: Around 130–100 BCE
  • Style: Hellenistic Greek sculpture      

       The statue’s arms were missing when it was discovered. Scholars have proposed various theories about what the arms were doing:

    The statue is widely believed to depict Aphrodite (known as Venus in Roman mythology), the goddess of love and beauty.
