Emil Cramer first isolated serine in 1865 from the silk protein sericin, which is where the name serine comes from. 

 

 

 

 

 

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, scientists were identifying amino acids as the building blocks of proteins. 

Serine was recognized as a naturally occurring amino acid present in many proteins.
