Violet

 

 


Paris violet—more accurately known as methyl violet or crystal violet—is a synthetic dye belonging to the triarylmethane group.

  • It belongs to the aniline dye family, derived from coal tar.
  • First synthesized in 1861 by the French chemist Charles Lauth.
  • Originally used to dye textiles a rich purple color

    Gram Staining 
     

     A major breakthrough came with Hans Christian Gram in 1884

    • He developed the Gram stain
    • Gentian violet became the primary stain, allowing classification of bacteria into Gram-positive and Gram-negative
     
     

     

               One of the first antimicrobial chemicals used in medicine
