“Mortimer’s malady” is also an old historical term linked to sarcoidosis, particularly its chronic cutaneous form.
The term comes from the English dermatologist Jonathan Hutchinson, who described patients with:
- Chronic, violaceous skin plaques
- Predominantly on the face (nose, cheeks, ears)
He named it after one of his patients, Mrs. Mortimer, leading to the term “Mortimer’s malady.”
