Acinetobacter baumannii is a Gram-negative, non-fermenting coccobacillus that has become one of the most important hospital-acquired (nosocomial) pathogens, especially in ICUs. 
 
If you see ICU + ventilator + MDR Gram-negative coccobacillus,
 
A. baumannii 
 
 
  • Gram stain: Gram-negative coccobacilli
  • Shape: Short, plump rods (often look like cocci)
  • Motility: Non-motile
  • Oxidase: Negative
  • Catalase: Positive
  • Aerobic organism 
  •
