 1835: The parasite was first identified in human muscle by James Paget, while he was still a student in London . His teacher, Richard Owen, formally described and named the organism.

1860s: German scientist Rudolf Virchow demonstrated:

  • Transmission occurs via eating infected meat, especially pork
  • Lifecycle involves intestine → bloodstream → muscle
