Coinauds Liver

                                                                        Claude Coinaud

Claude Couinaud (1922–2008) was a French anatomist and surgeon best known for describing the segmental anatomy of the liver, which revolutionized hepatobiliary surgery.

Couinaud Classification of the Liver

  • Divided the liver into 8 functionally independent segments (I–VIII)
  • Each segment has:
    • Its own portal vein, hepatic artery, and bile duct
    • Independent vascular inflow and outflow
  • This made precise surgical removal (segmentectomy) possible without damaging the rest of the liver
  • Forms the basis of:
    • Modern liver surgery
    • Radiological reporting (CT/MRI)
    • Tumor localization (e.g., hepatocellular carcinoma)
