Claude Coinaud
Claude Couinaud (1922–2008) was a French anatomist and surgeon best known for describing the segmental anatomy of the liver, which revolutionized hepatobiliary surgery.
Couinaud Classification of the Liver
- Divided the liver into 8 functionally independent segments (I–VIII)
- Each segment has:
- Its own portal vein, hepatic artery, and bile duct
- Independent vascular inflow and outflow
- This made precise surgical removal (segmentectomy) possible without damaging the rest of the liver
- Forms the basis of:
- Modern liver surgery
- Radiological reporting (CT/MRI)
- Tumor localization (e.g., hepatocellular carcinoma)
