Jacques Miller
Jacques Francis Albert Pierre Miller (1931–2024) was an Australian immunologist whose work transformed understanding of the immune system.
1961: Discovery of the Thymus Role
A breakthrough came in 1961 when Jacques Miller showed that mice whose thymus was removed shortly after birth developed severe immune deficiency. They could not reject grafts or fight infections effectively. This demonstrated that the thymus was essential for development of a key lymphocyte population.
This was the birth of the concept of thymus-derived lymphocytes, later called T cells.
