Aspergillus And Church (CHRISTIANITY)
The genus Aspergillus was first described in 1729 by the Italian priest and biologist Pier Antonio Micheli.
- He named it Aspergillus because its spore-bearing structure resembled an aspergillum (a holy water sprinkler).
The species Aspergillus fumigatus was formally identified in the 19th century.
- The name fumigatus comes from Latin, meaning “smoky,” referring to its gray-green colony appearance.
