The Virginia Company of London was an English joint-stock company chartered by King James I on 10 April 1606 with the primary goal of establishing a permanent English settlement in North America. While it failed as a commercial venture and was dissolved in 1624, its activities laid the foundation for the United States by establishing Jamestown in 1607—the first permanent English colony in the New World
Founding of Jamestown (1607): The company dispatched three ships—the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery—carrying roughly 104 men and boys who established Jamestown on 14 May 1607.
