World Elephant Day

Origins:

  • Elephants belong to the order Proboscidea, which appeared about 60 million years ago after the extinction of dinosaurs.
  • The earliest known relatives include Moeritherium (small, pig-sized, semi-aquatic animals) from the Eocene epoch (~37–35 million years ago).

Modern species:

  • Today only three species survive:
    1. African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana)
    2. African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis)
    3. Asian elephant (Elephas maximus)
