Origins:
- Elephants belong to the order Proboscidea, which appeared about 60 million years ago after the extinction of dinosaurs.
- The earliest known relatives include Moeritherium (small, pig-sized, semi-aquatic animals) from the Eocene epoch (~37–35 million years ago).
Modern species:
- Today only three species survive:
