Developed in Switzerland (University of Bern, early 2000s) by Prof. Michael Thali and colleagues.
The word “Virtopsy” combines virtual + autopsy.
Originally created to reduce the invasiveness of autopsies, respect cultural/religious objections, and improve forensic documentation.
Applications
- Forensic
Pathology – Detects causes of death (e.g., blunt force trauma, gunshot
wounds).
- Trauma
Analysis – Visualizes fractures and internal injuries in 3D.
- Age
Estimation – Useful in forensic anthropology.
- Mass
Disasters – Non-invasive identification of multiple victims.
- Court
Evidence – 3D reconstructions can be shown to judges and juries more
clearly than autopsy photos.
- Religious
& Ethical Considerations – Provides an alternative when traditional
autopsy is refused.
