Paul Langerhans
Paul Langerhans In University Of Berlin
1868 – Paul Langerhans
The German medical student Paul Langerhans first described these cells
in his doctoral thesis at the University of Berlin.
- He
observed special dendritic-shaped cells in the epidermis using a gold
chloride staining method.
- At
the time, he thought they were part of the nervous system, since
their dendritic projections resembled nerve cells.
Langerhans Cells - Skin
1940s–1950s
The immune role began to be suspected. Electron microscopy revealed Birbeck
granules (rod- or racket-shaped organelles unique to Langerhans cells),
distinguishing them from other skin cells.
BECK GRANULES = LANGERHANS CELLS
1960s–1970s
Experiments by Ralph Steinman and Zanvil Cohn (who discovered dendritic
cells in 1973) clarified that Langerhans cells were not neurons but rather antigen-presenting
immune cells.
