Watermelon Stomach
1984 – The term “watermelon stomach” was first used in a published paper by Jabbari et al.
-
They noted that the endoscopic appearance — red, longitudinal streaks in the gastric antrum — resembled the stripes of a watermelon rind.
-
This popular term quickly spread in clinical and research use.
Watermelon Stomach is the common name for a condition called Gastric Antral Vascular Ectasia (GAVE).
On endoscopy, the stomach lining shows long red streaks that radiate outward from the pylorus (stomach outlet)
