📌 First Description
-
1908 – George Coats (1876–1915)
-
A Scottish ophthalmologist, George Coats, first described the condition in his paper “Forms of Retinitis with Massive Exudation”.
-
He detailed the presence of abnormal retinal vessels, lipid-rich subretinal exudation, and progressive retinal detachment.
-
This became known as Coats disease.
-
Initially, Coats disease was thought to be a form of retinitis (inflammatory retinal disease).
Over time, with more histopathological studies, it was recognized as a primary retinal vascular disorder rather than inflammation.
