“Rinnenpankreatitis” (German: Groove Pancreatitis).

                                                                 Groove Pancreatitis

1970s – Initial Description

  • The condition was first described by Becker in 1973 (Germany).
    • Becker recognized fibrotic changes in the pancreaticoduodenal groove in chronic pancreatitis patients.

1982 – Detailed Characterization

  • Becker and Mischke (1982) published a series of cases and coined the term “Rinnenpankreatitis” (German: groove pancreatitis).
    • They distinguished it from ordinary chronic pancreatitis by its segmental, localized fibrotic changes in the groove region.

Groove pancreatitis is a rare, localized form of chronic pancreatitis that involves the pancreaticoduodenal groove — the small anatomical space between:

  • the head of the pancreas,

  • the medial wall of the duodenum, and

  • the common bile duct.
