Groove Pancreatitis
1970s – Initial Description
- The
condition was first described by Becker in 1973 (Germany).
- Becker
recognized fibrotic changes in the pancreaticoduodenal groove in chronic
pancreatitis patients.
1982 – Detailed Characterization
- Becker
and Mischke (1982) published a series of cases and coined the term “Rinnenpankreatitis”
(German: groove pancreatitis).
- They distinguished it from ordinary chronic pancreatitis by its segmental, localized fibrotic changes in the groove region.
Groove pancreatitis is a rare, localized form of chronic pancreatitis that involves the pancreaticoduodenal groove — the small anatomical space between:
-
the head of the pancreas,
-
the medial wall of the duodenum, and
-
the common bile duct.
