Mirror Syndrome
1892 – First Description
·
The
condition was first described by John William Ballantyne, a Scottish
obstetrician.
·
He reported
cases of “triple edema” in pregnant women:
1.
Maternal
edema (swelling in the mother)
2.
Fetal edema
(hydrops fetalis)
3.
Placental
edema (placentomegaly)
· Because the maternal symptoms “mirrored” the fetal condition, it later came to be called
Mirror Syndrome.
Mirror Syndrome remains a rare but significant obstetric condition
