Vesuvius Day

Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano located near Naples, Italy, formed about 25,000 years ago.

Mount Vesuvius has shaped human history for thousands of years—most famously with the 79 CE destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Since then, it has erupted many times, the last being in 1944

Vesuvius is currently dormant but still considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world

The Vesuvius Observatory (founded in 1841, the world’s first volcanological observatory) continues to monitor it closely.
