World Mosque Day, also known as International Mosque Day, is observed annually on August 21. It commemorates the devastating arson attack on the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, when an extremist set fire to the mosque in 1969, damaging approximately 1,500 square meters of its structure—including the pulpit, prayer niche, arches, and pillars.
In 2003, based on a proposal by Iran, the Organization
of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) officially designated August 21 as World
Mosque Day. This day serves to raise awareness about the spiritual, cultural,
and communal significance of mosques and the threats facing them—including
preservation of sacred spaces like Al-Aqsa
