Bacillus Atrophaeus


The term “atrophaeus” in Bacillus atrophaeus comes from Latin and is derived from the word:

Latin Origin:

  • "atro-" = darkblack, or gloom

  • "-phaeus" = from Greek phaeos, meaning dusky or grayish-dark

Often forms black or dark pigmented colonies (hence “atrophaeus” = “dark”)
