World Breastfeeding Week is a global campaign held
every first week of August to promote, protect, and support
breastfeeding. It aims to raise awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding
for infants, mothers, families, and communities.
1990: The Innocenti
Declaration was signed by WHO and UNICEF in Florence, Italy, setting global
goals for breastfeeding promotion.
1991: The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action
(WABA) was established to act on the declaration.
1992: The first World Breastfeeding Week was
celebrated.
Since then, WBW has
been observed in over 170 countries, becoming the world’s biggest joint
pro-breastfeeding initiative.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also supports World Breastfeeding Week and provides resources for healthcare professionals and families
