• The word "rum" may derive from Dutch “roemer”, a drinking glass.“Rumbullion” (a slang term meaning a great uproar or tumult),

        Birth of Rum (17th Century):

• Caribbean Discovery: Rum as we know it emerged in the Caribbean in the 1600s, particularly on sugar plantations in Barbados and Jamaica.

• Enslaved Africans discovered that molasses (a sugar refining by-product) could be fermented into alcohol and distilled into a potent spirit.

• First Distillation: The first true distillation of rum likely occurred in Barbados around the 1620s–1630s.
