In 1984, the U.S. Congress passed Joint Resolution 298 (Senator Huddleston) and H.J. Res. 543 (Rep. Kika de la Garza), officially designating July 1984 as “National Ice Cream Month” and July 15, 1984 as “National Ice Cream Day

On July 9, 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5219, calling ice cream “a nutritious and wholesome food enjoyed by over ninety percent of the people in the United States.”

Since then, the celebration has endured: National Ice Cream Month continues every July, and National Ice Cream Day is observed on the third Sunday of July
