First IVF Baby: Louise Brown (1978)

  • July 25, 1978: Louise Brown is born in England, the world’s first "test-tube baby", through IVF developed by:

    • Dr. Robert G. Edwards (physiologist)

    • Dr. Patrick Steptoe (gynecologist)

  • This success came after over a decade of failed attempts.

  • The embryo was fertilized outside the body and implanted into the uterus—marking the beginning of modern IVF

  • 2010: Robert Edwards is awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on IVF.
