Husband And Wife Discovered Immunoglobulin E
Kimishige Ishizaka and Teruko Ishizaka, working at
the Children's Asthma Research Institute and Hospital in Denver, Colorado, were
the first to isolate and identify IgE.
They published their discovery in 1967, showing that
this new class of immunoglobulin was responsible for triggering allergic
responses.
Scientific Importance of IgE
Physiological Role: Plays a role in immune defense
against helminths and other parasites.
Pathological Role: Central to the pathogenesis of type
I hypersensitivity reactions, such as:
