Crustaceans first appeared in the Cambrian Period (~500 million years ago).

True crabs (Brachyura) likely evolved during the Jurassic period (~200 million years ago).

Early crab-like ancestors, such as Eocarcinus, show up in the fossil record around 190 million years ago.
