Subclavian Steal Syndrome

1959–1960: Discovery by Contorni (Italy):

 The first description of reversed vertebral artery flow due to proximal subclavian artery occlusion came from Contorni in 1960.

 He identified retrograde vertebral artery flow as a compensatory mechanism in subclavian artery stenosis.

 

 1961 – Term "Subclavian Steal Syndrome" Coined:

  • F. Reivich et al. (USA):

In a landmark paper published in 1961 in Circulation, Reivich and colleagues described the phenomenon in humans and coined the term "subclavian steal."

They demonstrated the clinical consequences of this reverse blood flow through vertebral angiography.
