Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor is the most common type of sarcoma (cancer of connective tissue) found in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, most commonly in the stomach or small intestine.
Origin:
GIST arises from the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs), which help regulate peristalsis (the movement of food through the digestive tract).
Key Mutations:
Mutations in KIT or PDGFRA genes are most commonly involved in GIST development.
Symptoms May Include: Abdominal pain, bleeding, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and feeling of fullness.
