Wound Dressings
Bioactive Dressings = Biomaterials
Biomaterials: Alginate
Calcium Alginate is a highly absorbent wound dressing made from brown seaweed (algae).
Brown Sea Weed Algae = Calcium Alginate
It is commonly used to manage moderate to heavily exuding wounds by promoting a moist healing environment and aiding in hemostasis.
Mechanism of Action
1. Ion Exchange: When the
dressing contacts wound exudate (which contains sodium), calcium ions in the
dressing are exchanged for sodium.
2. Gel Formation: This exchange turns the dressing into a soft, hydrophilic gel, maintaining a moist wound environment conducive to healing.
3. Hemostasis: Calcium supports the clotting cascade, promoting local blood clotting in bleeding wounds.
