Ancient Egypt (c. 2000 BCE): Early Egyptians used animal glues for woodwork and embalming, which are precursors to gelatin.
Ancient Rome and China: Both civilizations developed techniques to extract gelatinous substances from animal parts by boiling bones and hides.
Expanded uses:
- Pharmaceuticals: Capsules, tablets, and plasma expanders.
- Photography: Gelatin used in film emulsions.
Food Industry: Marshmallows, gummy candies, yogurt, etc
Commercial production began in Europe and North America.Charles Knox (1890s, U.S.): Developed packaged gelatin powder for home use after his wife complained about the laborious traditional method.
1902: Jell-O brand advertised as “America’s Most Famous Dessert.”
