Dr. Bharat Kumar Anand
Known as the father of modern physiology in India.Played a key role in establishing AIIMS Delhi as a premier medical research institution.Awarded numerous honors, including the Padma Shri.
Dr. Bharat Kumar Anand, a pioneering Indian physiologist, made landmark contributions to our understanding of hunger regulation by the hypothalamus in the mid-20th century. His work, alongside Dr. John R. Brobeck, provided foundational insights into how the brain controls feeding behavior.
In 1951, B.K. Anand and J.R. Brobeck published a
seminal paper demonstrating that:
Lesions (damage) to the lateral hypothalamus in rats
caused complete loss of hunger, leading to aphagia (refusal to eat).
This led to the identification of the lateral
hypothalamus as the "feeding center" of the brain.
From these studies, the "Dual Center Hypothesis" of hunger was developed:
-
Lateral Hypothalamus (LH) → Feeding center (stimulates hunger)
-
Ventromedial Hypothalamus (VMH) → Satiety center (signals fullness)
