Case Fatality Rate: Botulinum Toxin

Case Fatality Rate

Botulinum toxin is widely recognized as the most lethal toxin known to humans, and it indeed has the highest case fatality rate among naturally occurring toxins if left untreated.

Van Ermengem was a professor of bacteriology at the University of Ghent.

He meticulously investigated the outbreak by analyzing:

The contaminated ham

Tissue samples from deceased individuals (including liver and intestines)

Stool and gastric samples from survivors

 Findings:

He isolated an anaerobic, spore-forming bacillus from both the ham and the bodies.

He demonstrated that this bacterium produced a powerful neurotoxin.
