Albert Calmette
Albert Calmette, a French bacteriologist (also known
for Calmette–Guérin or BCG vaccine), developed the first anti-cobra serum
in 1894 in Saigon (Vietnam).
He immunized horses with small doses of cobra venom.
Harvested their blood and used the serum to neutralize venom
in animals and humans.
Marked the birth of modern ASV therapy.
His methods laid the foundation for nearly 130 years of antivenom practice, with antibodies harvested from immunized animals still central to production today.
