World CML Day

Chronic Myeloid Leukemia is a blood stem cell disorder caused by the BCR-ABL fusion gene, resulting from the Philadelphia chromosome

 1983 – Philadelphia Chromosome & BCR-ABL

Discovery of the Philadelphia chromosome (Ph chromosome) in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).

Found that the BCR-ABL fusion gene produces a constitutively active tyrosine kinase, driving uncontrolled proliferation of white blood cells.

Early 1990s – Rational Drug Design

Dr. Nicholas Lydon and team at Ciba-Geigy (now Novartis) designed STI-571, later called Imatinib, to inhibit BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase specifically.

Current Events
