The aorta is the largest artery in the human body, and it serves as the main high-pressure blood vessel carrying oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
Aortic Dissection
1855 – George W. B. Cooper & William Gull described cases of “aortic rupture” with dissection on postmortem, emphasizing hypertension and medial degeneration.
1934 – Shennan’s Monograph: Pathologist T. Shennan published a seminal British Medical Research Council report on 220 cases of dissecting aneurysm, standardizing terminology and classification.
1955 – DeBakey’s Surgical Milestone: Dr. Michael E. DeBakey in Houston performed the first successful surgical repair of an aortic dissection using graft replacement.
1965 – DeBakey Classification introduced (Type I, II, III), based on extent of dissection.
1970 – Stanford Classification (Type A and B) proposed, based on whether the ascending aorta is involved—still the most widely used clinically
