Moynihan Hump

Sir Harold James Moynihan (1884–1966), an Irish-British surgeon.

 Moynihan was a pioneer in hepatobiliary and abdominal surgery. While performing operations, especially cholecystectomies, he observed a tortuous loop of the right hepatic artery that was prone to accidental injury.

First description: Moynihan described this arterial variant in the early 20th century (around the 1920s–1930s) as a surgical hazard and emphasized the need for careful dissection in the Calot’s triangle.

Clinical relevance: Over time, the Moynihan Hump became a classic example in surgical anatomy textbooks, highlighting anatomical variations in the hepatobiliary system and their implications for surgery.
